Discernment refers to several different things we are concerned with as Christians. This is one of the gifts of the Spirit we find mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11. However, every believer has a certain amount of discernment and it increases as they mature. Hebrews 5:13-14 says solid food (as opposed to milk) belongs to the mature "who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern between good and evil." We need to practive exercising our spiritual senses and using them on a regular basis. We desperately need to use the Holy Spirit's discernment and the ability He can give us to navigate through this life. This is particularly important when it comes to doctrine and understanding the Bible. The Holy Spirit promises to lead and guide us into all truth, and He often does this by giving us discernment. For example, when we encounter a miracle, we need to know what the source of it is. I was once in a small group that was part of a healing class and when we finished worshipping, the leader said that gold dust magically appeared in her Bible. The Holy Spirit can reveal if this was the truth or she put it there herself to try to validate her ministry. I met a guy at a bar who said he could read my mind. He told me to think of my mother's name and birthdate and he proceeded to write her name and birthdate on a card without knowing anything about me. It was the first time we met and he was accurate, with no possible way of knowing that information except for one method. As I've been able to get to know Him and share about my relationship with Christ, I discovered that he has entities helping him and a fox-like entity is always with him. Discernment is essential as people may even claim to be Christians and do things for God when, in fact, they are not genuine Christians, and are often assisted by spirits and entities that are not Godly. This man actually knows hundreds of demons/spirit beings/entities that help him do miraculous/superhuman/supernatural things that would blow your mind, but it's forbidden, demonic and very dangerous. He doesn't believe in God or the devil, yet he can see and travel in the spirit, and daily interacts with entities and demons. Please pray for this man Michael as he desperately needs a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ and I believe he will have one before he dies.
